Abstract

Quratulain Hyder wrote her first novel “Meray be Sanam Khanay" in 1949 when Progressive movement was the top trend in literature. Progressive writers belittled this novel and declared it merely worth a source of cheap entertainment for elite class of society. One of the progressive writers of that time called Quratulain as "Pom Pom Darling" in her satirical essay. None the less this novel presents the tragedy of intellectuals suffering from cultural decline, clash of civilization, migration and riots post Second World War and the partition of sub-continent." Meray be Sanam Khanay" is not only a historical document but also a of portrayal of the psychology and mentality of people of an important era. This research article tries to clarify all those misinterpretation and misconceptions due to which this novel has been denied its due place as a valuable piece of literature.
