Abstract

Maulvi Abdul Haq was a universal personality. He was known as a critic, linguist, lexicographer, editor, compiler, translator, psychologist, biographer and grammar writer. He devoted his entire life to the development and improvement of Urdu language. He called for making it the national language of Pakistan and for it to be used officially for communication throughout Pakistan. Due to the hard work of Maulvi Abdul Haq, Urdu language is now used in educational institutions of the country including Arts, Medical Sciences, Computer, Environmental Studies, Accounting, Mathematics, Economics, Business and others. Today, Urdu is the language of communication in various government offices. Maulvi Abdul Haq was a well-known Urdu critic, lexicographer, writer, astronomer and journalist. He was a strong supporter of the Urdu language movement. For this purpose he served Anjuman-e-Tarqi Urdu all his life, therefore he was awarded the title of "Father of Urdu". Maulvi Sahib was very active in Urdu literature and he played an important role in making Urdu the "national language" of Pakistan. He left an indelible mark on the history of Urdu literature. Maulvi Abdul Haq's important works are "Sermons of Abdul Haq", "Sir Syed Ahmad Khan", "Sofia Karam's share in the development of Urdu", "Chand Hum Ashar" etc. Born in 1880. He died in Meerut and Karachi in 1962.
